Our History
Sweet T Café in West Jefferson, formerly known as People’s Drug Café, carries on the tradition of the classic American lunch counter, a true community gathering place. Originally part of a regional pharmacy chain dating back to the early 1900s, spots like this served as everyday hubs for meals, conversation, and connection. Today, it remains a local favorite, preserving its small town charm while continuing to bring people together in the heart of Ashe County.
What’s in a name?
In 2012, Bradley and Aletha Eller, the current owners, acquired Peoples Drug, which included an in-house café. They saw the café as an untapped opportunity and recognized the need for it to have its own identity, separate from the pharmacy. To achieve this, they organized a “name the café” contest.
Among the many suggestions they received, one name stood out repeatedly: Louise Burgess. Louise had been a cornerstone of the café, having worked there for more than 35 years, long before the pharmacy moved to its current location. She managed, cooked, cleaned, and handled all the tasks necessary to keep the restaurant running. The café had become synonymous with her dedication and service, making it clear that the new name should honor her.
Thus, Louise’s Sweet T Café was born. The capital “T” in the name has a special significance: it refers to the Ellers’ young daughter, Tucker, who inspired that addition. Louise retired in 2014, but her legacy remains strong.
Keeping Tradition Alive
The café has preserved its retro décor, maintaining the original atmosphere as new items were needed. Many of Louise’s recipes are still featured on the menu, even as it has expanded over the years. Old favorites, such as homemade pies, prepared salads, chili, and slaw, continue to be served.
Built on Good Food, Done Right
The business has grown since 2012, expanding substantially since its humble beginnings. Despite this growth, one principle remains unchanged, the goal is always to offer “good food, done right.” We’ve recently rebranded to simply “Sweet T Café,” while keeping the same food, hospitality, and small town charm you know and love.
We look forward to serving you soon!
